FAQ: Understanding Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a natural, focused state of awareness that most people experience daily—such as when drifting into sleep or becoming deeply absorbed in thought. During hypnosis, you remain awake and in control while your body relaxes and the mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions.

This relaxed state helps quiet mental noise and allows the subconscious mind to access memories, patterns, and internal awareness that influence behavior and decision-making. By strengthening the connection between mind and body, hypnosis can support insight, learning, and intentional change.

Through guided hypnosis, new neural pathways can be reinforced, helping shift unhelpful thought patterns and support healthier habits, personal growth, and performance goals.

  • Hypnosis is all about focus, concentration, and complete relaxation. When you enter a hypnotic state, your brain waves are similar to those when you're falling asleep or waking up—essentially, when your mind is relaxed. Since everyone experiences sleep, everyone can be hypnotized. If you feel safe and comfortable in the environment, you’ll find it easy to enter this state.

  • Not at all! Hypnosis is a powerful, natural process that doesn’t require any special skill. If you can follow directions and allow yourself to relax, you will be able to enter a hypnotic state. In fact, we all experience forms of hypnosis in our daily lives when we get lost in a good book or movie.

  • Many people mistakenly believe that hypnosis puts them completely under the hypnotherapist's control, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While hypnotized, you’ll feel relaxed and focused, but you’ll remain fully aware of your surroundings. You can choose to end the session at any time, and it’s common to wonder, “Was I really hypnotized?” With each session, you may find it easier to enter and maintain this relaxed state

  • No, hypnosis is not the same as deep sleep. Many people report hearing every word during their session or feeling they could easily open their eyes if they wanted to. In hypnosis, you are aware of everything around you, much like during meditation. However, there’s a deeper internal focus and a profound sense of relaxation. In this state, your subconscious mind becomes receptive to positive suggestions and visualizations that align with your goals.

  • Virtual session are as effective as in-person sessions, if not more so in some cases. Virtual sessions allow you to experience hypnosis in the comfortable, familiar environment of your own home or office, and they cut down on travel time required to visit a hypnotist’s office.
